March is Reading Month

Reading month is here and we just wanted to send along the calendar and update you on some of the big events that will be coming up this month.

Reading Month Calendar

Reading Contest: This month, instead of filling buckets with compliments we will be filling our buckets with books. Each time on of your students finishes reading a book, have them fill out a star and place it in your classroom bucket.

Character Dress Up Day: Encourage your students to dress up as a character from their favorite book!

Library Card Day: If you have any students that sign up for a library card, or bring in a library card on March 14th, they will recieve $1,000 Eagle Dollars.

Author Visit: This year our author is Lisa Wheeler. If you are interested in checking out the books she has written, you can visit her website:

Door Decorating: We will have one week to decorate our doors. For new teachers, what we usually do is decorate our classroom doors with a theme that relates to a book written by our guest author. Check out the books on her website, and if you have any further questions feel free to ask!

Bingo for Books/Literacy Night: This will take place on an extended day so that everyone can stay after and help out!

Book Swap: Students will recieve one ticket for every gently used book that they bring in. They will be able to use their tickets to get new/used books.

Guest Readers: We are working on getting guests to come in and read books to classes. If you have any ideas of people who would be willing to come in, please email us! We are looking for people in uniform, who have interesting professions, and aren't shy in front of kids! (Firefighters, police officers, nurses, military, etc)

Cesar Chavez's Birthday: This day will mark the end of our reading contest. We will tally up the number of books read by each class, distribute certificates, watch a short movie on Cesar Chavez, have cupcakes for his birthday, and finally have a balloon launch. Last year, at the lower elementary we had students write their reading goals on their a little piece of paper and attach it to a balloon. We then released all of the balloons together outside. It actually worked out pretty well, the kids loved it!

It will be a great month! Pump up your students for reading month! :)
