Korie Thompson won a Gold Medal in the recycled and redesign category. “it was really fantabulous to win.” Korie said. Korie made a medieval costume dress out of a recycled sofa cover, two curtains and a tablecloth. “I didn’t think I was going to win after the judges only spent 10 minutes judging my dress.” Korie said. Summer Q. won the silver medal in fashion construction for a blue cocktail dress that she made out of a tablecloth. In the same fashion construction category Fernanda B. won the bronze medal for a cotton floral school dress. “Everyone screamed when our names were called.” Fernanda said. “It was awesome.” Alondra R. won the honorable mention award for using a draping method to create a sample garment from her original sketch. Alondra said she had the same reaction as the other girls. “It was good.” Alondra said. Mrs. Nelson-Green is our fashion teacher and the driving force behind this wonderful group of students.“Watching the girls faces light up when their name were called is one of my favorite memories.” Nelson-green said, “Also when Korie’s mother cried when they called her name. She told me that no one has ever won anything in her family.” Mrs. Nelson-Green said watching her students embody perseverance when they stayed up late to finish their designs, when other students may have given up; the Skyview students continued working on their garments. “Mrs. Nelson-Green is one of the reasons why I do work.” Korie said. “She pushes me to do it. She’s the reason why I’m graduating” Next year Mrs. Nelson-Green hopes to have more students enter the competition, after the success of this year's students. She can already count on Fernanda, Summer and Alondra entering in again.
“Next year we’re going to go to Nationals” Fernanda said.
