FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q. WHAT IS A CHARTER SCHOOL?

A. Charter schools are free public schools. They are an alternative for students for whom traditional public schools may not be particularly effective. Charter schools receive state funding on a per- student basis, the same as traditional public school funding but do not receive capital funding.

Q. ARE CHARTER SCHOOLS OPEN TO EVERYONE?

A. Charter schools are open to all students. Because they are public schools funded by the state, there are no fees or tuition required to attend a charter school.

Q. WHY DOES A STUDENT CHOOSE TO ATTEND A LEONA CHARTER SCHOOL?

A. There are many reasons. Our students love the smaller, more caring and respectful school environment. In our Arizona high schools, students enjoy flexible class schedules and our four-day class week, with Fridays open for individual tutoring. In the Midwest, families like the full-day kindergarten classes, student dress codes and personalized attention. At all Leona schools, our students like the fact that our school leaders and teachers know their names and their families.

Q. HOW DOES THE LEONA GROUP SELECT ITS SCHOOL LEADERS AND TEACHERS?

A. We are very selective. We hire teachers and school leaders based on their education, experience, commitment and overall background. We have an excellent, diverse group of teachers and staff who are highly qualified.

Q. DO CHARTER SCHOOLS LIKE LEONA SCHOOLS HAVE TO MEET STATE CURRICULUM STANDARDS?

A. Absolutely. While each school staff creates its own academic program focus, we adhere to rigorous state curriculum standards, and our students graduate with the same qualifications as those who graduate from a traditional public school.

Q. CAN CREDITS EARNED AT ANOTHER SCHOOL BE TRANSFERRED TO A LEONA SCHOOL AND VICE VERSA?

A. Course credits from any traditional public or charter school may be transferred to a Leona school. Likewise, credits earned at a Leona school can be transferred. The Leona Group works with school districts and colleges to ensure that our courses meet academic requirements. In fact, many of the Arizona high schools are accredited by the North Central Association, an independent accrediting organization.

Q. WHAT ARE LEONA GROUP SCHOOLS AND CAMPUSES LIKE?

A. Leona schools provide students with a personalized, friendly, caring atmosphere. We uphold at all times a drug-free, gang-free learning environment. We intentionally do not have a large campus environment. Leona schools emphasize core academics: it's not what's on the outside of the building but the education taking place inside the building that counts. Leona schools offer many extracurricular activities, based on student requests and needs, including student council, National Honor Society, clubs, volunteer work and sports.
