Dear SPJHS Community:
There are dozens of encounters with students and parents that stay with me. These encounters serve as the memories of our shared history and a demonstration of what is down the road for us in the future. Two such encounters come to mind. After a long day, I was on my way home and noticed a homeless man at the corner of Central and Baseline. This destitute homeless man was approached by a young child who handed him a bag of chips. I was touched by the gesture of this youngster, and more importantly was very proud that the student was wearing our Griffin purple and representing our school in this act of giving and compassion.
Another encounter that comes to mind happened during one of our basketball games. The young men of the teams were in a fierce game and putting their all into their role. A member of the other team took a hard fall; as others cleared away it was apparent the young boy was still on the court, I watched one of our young men walk over to the fallen player of the opposing team and reach out his hand to help him up. The Griffin purple was represented as it was intended that day on the court. Winning or losing didn't matter; the character and integrity of our helpful student is what mattered.
