Ninth Grade Academy
We are very excited about the privilege to provide a Ninth Grade Academy this September. As always, we strive to provide a safe yet challenging environment for students as they enter high school.
Grade 9 is the foundational year for high school. Most dropouts occur during this year. This year we hope to eliminate the stress and anxiety often experienced at large, impersonal high schools while providing a high quality educational experience.
We will be offering Algebra, Spanish, American History, Integrated Science and English/Language Arts, health and some off-campus gym classes for our core courses. We are busy ordering brand new textbooks for our students. Electives will include engineering/robotics, culinary arts, fine arts, drama and technology
The Ninth Grade Academy will be housed in the annex which has been redecorated and rewired for dependable Internet access. Twenty-five brand new computers will be in the new computer lab in the annex. We will have an Open House/Parent Orientation for grade 9 students and their family on Wednesday, September 2.
Uniforms for grade 9 will be different from the rest of the school. Girls will wear khaki or black slacks with power pink oxford style dress shirts. Boys will wear khaki or black slacks with blue oxford style dress shirts. Black cardigan or pullover v-neck sweaters are permitted. Black v-neck pullover vests are also acceptable. Black casual dress shoes are required. No gym shoes except on gym days. We will provide t-shirts and sweat pants which your child can wear on gym days, in place of the regular uniform, so please call the office with sizes for your child (gym clothing only).
K-5 Counselor
Former Math Specialist Ms. Leslie Reid will serve as the new Elementary School Counselor. She is a certified school counselor with a masters in Guidance and Counseling. Ms. Reid will fully implement the PBS (Postive Behavior Support) program. The PBS program provides support for the K -5 teachers in efforts to improve the overall classroom and school academic climate. Ultimately, helping all students to achieve higher academically.
Sports
PTA will be continuing its seven-year relationship with Think Detroit PAL. We will have a basketball team for grades 5-6 and a team for girls in 7-8. Each team will be accompanied by the PTA cheer squad.
