"Lunch-n-Learn" at Highland Park Renaissance Academy
Highland Park Renaissance Academy (HPRA) has adopted their first Lunch and Learn program. It caters to grades kindergarten thru third grade. Teachers are available daily, during their lunch or prep time, to give extra support to the children that are performing below grade level. HPRA developed the program to make the students more efficient and effective in the classroom. "Lunch-n-Learn" gives HPRA students a greater understanding of the curriculum; more empathy from their teachers; and stronger personal and professional relationships between the teachers and students. HPRA believes in the power of strong relationships, bonding, and connectedness.
"The first session went very well," said Carmen Willingham, HPRA school leader. The teachers had to complete a survey at the completion of the first session. Here are a few successes and/or take-a-ways from the teachers: "the group interaction helped teachers better understand their students; the progress for low performing students was tremendous; conversations with students uninterrupted was fascinating; students love the one-on-one attention, which makes them feel special."
The goal is to continue with the program so HPRA students will continue to show academic growth and success.
